Olof Grind: At the End of the Dream [signed]

This is Olof Grind's first book – a book about the joyous liberation of reaching adulthood. Tender, dreamy portraits and moon-like landscapes which at times can remind us of Ryan McGinley.

The book “At the End of the Dream” is created over a time span of 12 years, from the authors 18th birthday until the end of his 20s. It documents the process of entering adulthood and the feelings of freedom that comes with this. To live through your twenties is in a way to enter an invincible state of endless possibilities where the world is in front of your feet. The series document youth, and the gravitation and longing towards sources of a higher connection to our human conditions and the core of our planet; nature. Always with a queer view of the surroundings.

The title is a reference to the feeling of turning a chapter in life, when the first decade of adulthood has passed and a new sense of calmness is planted. At the same time, it’s a hint at the global state of crisis that humanity has entered through our recklessness with our natural resources. The book can in this way become a double depiction of a decade; both at an individual level and at a greater framework where humanity took no real action for the consequences of our behavior. Both paths are at the verge of a metamorphose to enter into a new state.
Beyond the strong visual storytelling of the imagery, Grind have also invited the author Madeleine Schantz to interpret his work in a short story that opens the book.
As a musician Grind works under the name Luminous Kid.

Olof Grinds bok "AT THE END OF THE DREAM" sträcker sig över en period av 10 år och utgår ifrån ett queert självbiografiskt drömskt narrativ med glimtar av platser och människor, som dokumenterar processen av att kliva in i det vuxna livet och frihetskänslan som kommer med detta. Att genomleva sin tjugoårsperiod kan liknas med att kliva in i en oövervinnerlig dröm där allt är möjligt och världen står framför ens fötter. Serien dokumenterar ungdomen, det frihetstörstande och oerhörda, rastlösheten och rotlösheten.

Titeln refererar till känslan av att närma sig ett nytt kapitel i livet, när det första årtiondet efter studenten har passerat och ett nytt slags lugn har planterats, samtidigt som dekadensen som ofta kommer med ungdomen börjar komma ikapp och värderingar och prioriteringar börjar skifta. Parallellt är titeln en referens till att människan som grupp har levt långt över våra tillgångar och resurser, och nu närmar vi oss slutet på drömmen och börjar se ordentliga konsekvenser av våra handlingar. Boken får på så vis bli ett dubbelt tidsdokument, där den dokumenterar en epok ur en individs livsbana och samtidigt en era där människan kände att dess existensberättigande var en självklart och att ens beteende stod över naturen och planeten – båda två på väg in i en metamorfos för att övergå i något nytt.

Utöver bildernas tydliga historieberättande har Grind även bjudit in författaren Madeleine Schantz till att tolka titeln, temat och det visuella innehållet i en fiktiv novell som öppnar boken. Boken är 224 sidor med tre alternativa omslag. Tillsammans med boken släpps en skiva med samma namn under alias ”Luminous Kid”, vilket är en akustisk, poesi-driven utgivning som siktar på att översätta bildskapandet och erfarenheterna till mjuka melodier som fångar samma stämning och berättande som Olof Grinds bildkonst inger. Tillsammans med självregisserade musikvideos till projektet skapar Olof Grind ett komplett paket av queer konst.
